Following the midterm elections, New Yorkers have new hope that recreational marijuana legalization could happen soon. The Democratic Party has regained control of the state’s senate. Democrats are known for being more progressive – especially when it comes to recreational marijuana.
Supporters expect that Democratic control will limit Republican opposition to future legislation, Lohud notes. Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), has been elected to a third term. The New York General Assembly has also remained primarily Democrat.
Governor Cuomo previously opposed recreational marijuana but had a change of heart earlier this year. With the recommendation of legalization from a Department of Health study – legalization may be on the horizon. Legislation has already been proposed for the 2019 legislative session.
