New York’s Governor Receives “A” Grade from Pro-Marijuana Group

Governor Andrew Cuomo has been very vocal about his intention to ensure that adult use marijuana is legalized in New York. Although efforts to legalize adult use marijuana faced some challenges in 2019, Cuomo is working even harder to make legalization happen in 2020.

Cuomo is one of the few to receive a high grade as only 9 governors, all Democrats, received an A, NORML reported. New York decriminalized simple possession and also made more changes to New York’s marijuana decriminalization law. The state is working to automatically expunge the records of those previously convicted for possessing up to 25 grams of marijuana.

Governor Cuomo has been quoted saying, “I believe the budget is the opportunity, frankly, to make some tough decisions and work through tough issues that without the budget can often languish, and I suggest that we get it done in the budget.”

Cuomo has not vetoed any legislation and has included legalization in the 2020 state budget. He’s even willing to work with New York’s neighboring states to come up with a multi-state system for marijuana legalization. He supports increased research.
